Stan Brock would have been ninety years old on April 21, 2026. He passed away on August 29, 2018 .
Don’t know who Stan Brock was? Or maybe you thought I was writing about the Stan Brock who was enshrined in the New Orleans Saints Hall of Fame in 1997?
The Stan Brock I am writing about founded Remote Area Medical (RAM) in 1985. He spent thirty-three years of his life working to bring a vision of RAM to life- bringing about a future where basic medical care is available to all, not limited by cost or distance. He never accepted a salary from RAM and chose to live in the RAM office. Forty-one years later and 200,000 volunteers later, the mission of RAM continues. RAM volunteers are health care workers from all areas. They set up mobile health care centers available for all who need them. No insurance, or doctor’s referral necessary, just the need for basic care.
RAM’s mission is a long way from being completed, but it is heartening to realize that this amazing group continues to pursue Stan Brock’s vision.
